Introduction

The Enoch Systems FlexIO V1 is an entry level front I/O network appliance based on the Intel Q77 Express Chipset and uses 3rd generation Intel Core processors with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, Intel Pentium processors, and Intel Celeron processors.  FlexIO V1 is meant for OEM and ISV customers that need a reliable network appliance platform; that can be customized and branded to deliver their product and services on.

Branding and Private Labeling

The FlexIO V1 server appliance was designed to be easily branded with your corporate identity. Our in-house design group is available to assist in implementing your branding or to help develop a design concept. Some product finishing methods used include, powder coating, liquid coating, and silk screening. Custom brushed aluminum or glass bead blast bezels can be created. FlexIO V1’s all aluminum construction can be anodized in a variety of colors that include, black, gray, yellow, red, purple, green, blue and hundreds of shades in between. In addition to silk screening, graphic overlays can be created to give more robust labeling options.

Technology

Intel Q77 Express Chipset

The Intel Q77 Express Chipset in the FlexIO V1 offers a solid foundation that enables many onboard technologies that customers can use to differentiate their product in the market.  Technologies such as Intel Active Management Technology (iAMT) allow users to use or develop management and security applications that enable end users the ability to remotely manage, update, or repair the FlexIO V1.  FlexIO V1 also offers RAID 0 and 1 supports for protection or speed.  Intel Rapid Recover Technology allows you to create a recovery point that can be used to quickly recover a system should a hard drive fail or if there is data corruption.  More information about the Q77 can be found in Intel’s Product Brief.

FlexIO V1 features one PCI Express 3.0 16-lane slot that will accommodate any PCI express card currently found on the market.  The PCI Express 3.0 16-lane slot gives you up to 15.75 GB/s of bandwidth or 128 GT/s in each direction.  This bandwidth ensures performance eliminates any potential bottlenecks at the bus.

Design

FlexIO V1 was designed with modularity in mind.  This modularity provides you with the professional look of an appliance without the high up front cost, large minimum order commitment, and long lead-time.

The Appliance Problem
OEM and ISV customers need hardware platforms to deliver their software, technology, services on.  They have two choices; either buy a traditional off-the-shelf (OTS) system and then private label it or develop a custom solution.   Each scenario has its pros and cons, but either way you are stuck with a product that does not represent your intended goals, unplanned obsolescence, major capital expenditures, and delayed lead-times.

When seeking a hardware platform to use, many resort to off-the-shelf (OTS) systems, e.g. Dell, HP, Supermicro, etc.  Many companies design in these products initially, because they are readily available and relativity low cost.  But they offer no brand identity or differentiation amongst the other equipment in the rack.  To solve this problem customers invest in additional private labeling of this equipment, whether it is custom bezels or graphic overlays with their branding. This solves the branding problem, but you are left with another problem, it still looks like a computer not an appliance.   

OTS systems make it hard to break away from the pack and really standout with a stunning appliance that screams look at me in the rack.  All the I/O on these systems is exposed, video, USB, etc.  You do not want customers plugging in monitors and keyboards poking around in the system.  This is an appliance, it needs to be locked down and certain access needs to be available only at the factory level.

Lastly one of the problems with traditional OTS solution is unplanned obsolescence.  Most OTS systems are catered towards the enterprise market that craves the latest and greatest.  The systems have a shelf life of 1-2 years max.  After that the manufactures will roll out new systems and discontinue everything else.  Of course this is all done without you knowing.  There is no heads up or end of life announcement that gives you the ability to transition to the new model.  You are forced to scramble and pray that your existing hardware and software will work with the new platform.

Now on the other end of the spectrum we have a custom developed solution also known as an original design manufacturer (ODM) solution.  With an ODM solution you get everything you want.  The form factor and private labeling will be exactly to your specification.  All the technical specifications, configuration, external I/O, components, and packaging will developed to your specification.  But there will be a price, large NRE fees and minimum order quantities, not to mention prototype costs.  Custom development and engineering takes time, so it will be months before you receive the first prototype, months to tweak the prototype, months before you receive your first production order.  The ODM model only makes sense for large volume requirements where the initial capital investment is easily amortized over the number units you’re selling or your margins are good enough to absorb the cost over a few units.

Unfortunately there is not much that can be done to reduce your time to market (TTM) with the ODM solution.  Depending on the engineering and development involved, it could be over a year before you received production product.  Every day your waiting for your product is a day of lost revenue and opportunity.

Our Solution
The solution to the appliance problem is our Flex I/O appliance product line.  Flex I/O appliances are off-the-shelf systems that we have engineered to give you the maximum flexibility in your configuration options, while maintaining the look and feel of an appliance. 

Only select the I/O that you want to expose on the exterior.  FlexIO V1 has standard IO options available such as USB, VGA, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, and serial ports that can be exposed on the front the system.  Since most appliances require some kind of specialized add-on hardware.  One PCI Express 3.0 16-lane slot is available for expansion.   This slot is dual purpose in that it can house your add-on card internally completely hidden from the outside or we can expose the I/O on this card to the front the chassis.

Our modular design approach to the Flex I/O product line enables us to make I/O changes to the front quite easily.  Instead of redesigning the chassis to accommodate these requests, only one part on FlexIO V1 needs to be customized, the front faceplate.  The front faceplate on FlexIO V1 can be easily changed out, customized, and rebranded without having to touch the rest of the system.  You could receive a custom FlexIO V1 with your requested I/O and branding in 4-weeks from the moment you approve the initial drawings and renderings.  Minimum order quantities for a customized FlexIO V1 are very low, only 10 pieces.  As for Non-recurring engineering (NRE) fees to redesign the faceplate, in most cases an NRE fee is not required.  All that is required is the purchase of a prototype FlexIO V1 system.  However applicable setup fees will apply for silk-screening, painting, powder-coating, and graphic overlay services.
